The word “Botox” has become associated with beauty, celebrity, looking youthful, and anti-aging treatment. But, what is “Botox” exactly, how can it help you specifically, and when is the right age to start getting Botox treatments? These and many more questions can be answered at RENATA Facial Cosmetic Surgery in Northern Brooklyn. Dr. Renata Khelemsky is a double board-certified facial cosmetic surgeon and offers comprehensive facial evaluations and skincare recommendations to every first-time patient.
Botox Cosmetic is widely known as the foremost cosmetic injectable treatment for frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. As a neuromodulator, Botox first came onto the market in 2002 and was the first FDA-approved cosmetic product to treat severe wrinkles and lines. Botox contains an active ingredient known as botulinum toxin Type A, which is used to reduce the activity of your muscles from making repeated movements. Specifically, it works by temporarily preventing the nerve impulses from reaching the muscle, thus relaxing the targeted muscle even when you animate your face. Because the skin is attached to the muscles of the face, the skin appears smoother and free of fine lines and wrinkles when the muscle is in its relaxed state.
Derived from the botulinum toxin, Botox works to relax your dynamic lines but has also been recommended for the use of:
In these conditions, Botox prevents your nerves from sending signals to muscles that trigger these symptoms. With repeated maintenance, Botox patients often experience long-lasting relief from these issues.
Botox effectively addresses various aesthetic concerns related to aging and facial expression. Some of the common aesthetic issues treated by Botox include:
Your facial movements define your emotions - smiling, frowning, laughing. However, the chronic and repeated use of certain muscles in the upper face causes wrinkles to appear at rest over time. In some patients, these wrinkles can be strikingly visible due to thicker and stronger facial muscles. Additional factors to consider are genetics, sun damage, environmental pollutants, and dietary health — all of which can make your skin appear more aged.
Botox can be used to treat several areas of the face to address specific aesthetic concerns. Some of the common areas treated with Botox include:
With repeated facial contractions, the lines on your forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes, begin to imprint along the surface of the skin, which become more and more visible over time. After the age of 20, one percent of collagen is lost each year—leaving your skin with less elasticity and more prone to wrinkles. Botox is effective in treating the following:
During your consultation, Dr. Renata will assess which areas are affected by dynamic lines and outline your treatment plan for natural-looking, transformational results. Dr. Renata would like to see you through the entire cycle of your nonsurgical facial rejuvenation, from injectable treatments to skincare treatments. By maintaining a long-lasting and trusted relationship with patients, Dr. Renata gets to know each patient’s developing tastes and wishes through time, which promotes an incremental and natural approach to facial rejuvenation.
If you are bothered by lines and wrinkles along the forehead, between the brows, or around the eyes, you may consider Botox as a cosmetic solution. There is no “right” time to start Botox; rather, there may be the right time for you. Today, younger patients in their 20s and 30s seek gentle and low-dose treatments with Botox to relax dynamic wrinkles that are just starting to be visible. The benefit for younger patients is that the smoothness of the skin is maintained throughout the early aging process when wrinkles would otherwise become increasingly visible.
On the other hand, patients who already have a more consistent appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are able to have Botox injections for smoothing and rejuvenation. Usually, patients in their 40s and 50s require higher doses of Botox than younger patients to fully relax and alleviate the associated wrinkles.
If you are pregnant or nursing, it is not advised to undergo injectable treatments such as Botox or JUVÉDERM® fillers. Unfortunately, there have not been clinical trials demonstrating the safety of Botox or fillers during pregnancy, and thus, their effects remain largely unknown. While such treatments have an excellent safety record among adults, there is limited information about such treatments affecting a fetus or newborn baby, and are thus not recommended for expecting or nursing mothers.
You do have options with neuromodulators similar to Botox. Here are other FDA-approved options similar to Botox and that are used for minimizing the appearance of dynamic lines and wrinkles. These products are all made with the same active ingredient — botulinum toxin Type A, which relaxes the contraction of muscle tissue. However, it is important to note their slight differences.
Xeomin is an excellent primary option, as well as one for patients who no longer respond to Botox or Dysport treatments. Xeomin is FDA-approved and offers effective results. Made with the same active ingredient as Botox, Xeomin has one key difference in its molecular structure - it is manufactured without the use of protein additives and is thus known as the purest form of botulinum toxin Type A.
Proteins have been implicated in the development of antibodies against injectables, which may reduce their efficacy over time. This lack of proteins in the Xeomin formulation may help to prevent the onset of resistance. Before choosing a specific brand of neuromodulator, it is important to review any prior experience you may have had with Botox or other injectables.
This neuromodulator has gained popularity in recent years and is referred to as “NEWTOX.” It was FDA-approved in 2019 and has the same active ingredient as Botox - botulinum toxin Type A, making it another excellent Botox alternative. Jeaveau undergoes a proprietary purification process that may lead to a clinically more effective response over Botox for some patients.
However, Botox and Jeaveau are both neuromodulators that relax muscle tissue to minimize wrinkles, and when used by an experienced provider, they both have the ability to produce similar results.
An excellent alternative for patients who are new to wrinkle reduction injections. One of the major differences between Dysport and Botox is how their dosages work. A single unit of Botox equates to three Dysport units. We will appropriately dose your treatment depending on which product is used.
Dysport has other differences in the molecular structure of its formula. Dysport tends to produce results faster than Botox. It also tends to spread more easily in the treatment area, which can mean fewer injections needed to achieve results. However, Dysport and Botox work similarly to relax the muscles into which they are injected, causing a decrease in movement and thus a decrease in wrinkling of the overlying skin. For this reason, both products can each achieve similar aesthetic results.
Before your Botox your skin must be clear of make-up, debris, or any infection. You will receive pre-treatment instructions to ensure a safe and satisfactory cosmetic treatment, like avoiding blood-thinning medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain herbal supplements that may increase your chance of bruising. Your Botox treatment will take about 10 to 20 minutes. A fine needle is used to treat the areas discussed in your treatment plan. Many patients find the slight sensation of the injection very tolerable, while others request the use of numbing medication for more comfort.
Botox has little to no downtime, and most patients resume their normal activities after their treatment. However, it is crucial to refrain from touching or massaging the areas, laying down, applying pressure to treated areas, or strenuous exercise for approximately six to eight hours after treatment. Your results become noticeable in about three days and get more visible as the week progresses. With treatments of Botox, patients may experience a noticeable enhancement in their appearance up to three to four months and can be repeated as needed to maintain optimal results.

Complications with this treatment are rare with an experienced facial cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Renata. Still, some treatment side effects can occur, including bruising, swelling, soreness in the treated area, or a minor headache. Patients might experience some mild asymmetry with results, which we can then easily adjust at a follow-up appointment.
Botox and dermal fillers effectively treat fine lines and wrinkles; however, they are very different treatments. Dermal fillers are designed to add volume to areas of the face that experience volume loss, whereas Botox prevents muscle contraction for an overall smoother appearance. While they both minimize lines and wrinkles, Botox is largely used in the upper third of the face, where facial expressions create dynamic wrinkles. Fillers, on the other hand, can be used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the lower two-thirds of the face by directly filling the hollow in the skin. Dr. Khelemsky will discuss the best treatment for your concerns during your personalized consultation.
You can expect to see initial results from your Botox treatment within a few days, typically around three to five days after the injections. However, the full effects of Botox may take up to two weeks to become fully apparent. During this time, the targeted muscles gradually relax, resulting in smoother and more youthful-looking skin.
It's essential to have realistic expectations and understand that individual results may vary. Factors such as the severity of wrinkles, muscle strength, and metabolism can influence how quickly you notice improvements from Botox treatment. Dr. Renata Khelemsky will provide you with detailed post-treatment instructions and schedule a follow-up appointment to assess your progress and ensure satisfaction with your results.
The duration of Botox results can vary from person to person, but on average, the effects typically last a few months. Over time, the muscle-relaxing effects of Botox gradually diminish, allowing muscle activity to return, and wrinkles may begin to reappear.
To maintain optimal results, periodic touch-up treatments are recommended. With regular maintenance treatments, many patients find that the longevity of their Botox results can be extended, and they can enjoy a consistently refreshed appearance.
Dr. Renata Khelemsky will discuss your aesthetic goals and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs, including recommendations for maintaining your results over time.
In your consultation, Dr. Khelemsky assesses your facial concerns and creates a customized treatment plan for you. The number of Botox units will vary from patient to patient, as well as individualized aesthetic goals such as maintenance treatments to optimize your results.
